Quick Answer: Use 3 Jura descaling tablets (not 2) dissolved in a full tank of cold water. Wait until tablets are fully dissolved before starting the program. The cycle takes 30-45 minutes. If the machine still prompts to descale afterward, run a second cycle - heavy scale buildup sometimes needs two passes. Never use white vinegar; it damages internal seals.
Scale is the number one cause of premature failure in espresso machines. Calcium and magnesium from your water supply deposit on heating elements, pipes, and valves, reducing flow, affecting temperature, and eventually causing breakdowns. Regular descaling prevents all of this.

When to Descale
Your Jura will prompt you when descaling is due, but here are the general guidelines:
- Soft water (0-3 grains hardness): Every 3-4 months
- Medium water (4-7 grains): Every 2-3 months
- Hard water (8+ grains): Every 1-2 months
- With CLARIS filter installed: The filter reduces scale, extending intervals to 3-6 months depending on water hardness
Test your water hardness using the test strip included with your Jura, or pick up inexpensive strips from any hardware store. This tells you how often you need to descale.
What You Need
- Jura descaling tablets (3 tablets per cycle, dissolved in a full water tank)
- Fresh water for rinsing
- A container (at least 500ml) to catch discharge water
- 30-45 minutes of time (the machine does the work, but you need to be nearby)

Products to Use (and Avoid)
| Product | Safe for Jura? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jura descaling tablets | Yes (recommended) | Formulated specifically for Jura machines |
| Citric acid-based descalers | Yes (with caution) | Use correct concentration; rinse thoroughly |
| White vinegar | Not recommended | Can damage seals and leave lingering odor |
| Generic dishwasher descaler | No | Wrong formulation; may damage internal components |
Prevention: CLARIS Water Filters
The best way to reduce descaling frequency is to use a CLARIS water filter in the tank. The filter removes calcium and magnesium before they enter the system. Replace it every 50 liters or when your machine prompts you.
With a CLARIS filter, many owners only need to descale 2-3 times per year instead of every 1-2 months. See our Jura CLARIS filter guide for the full compatibility table - which filter fits which model, and the replacement schedule by water hardness level.
Jura CLARIS Smart Filter
Reduces scale buildup and extends descaling intervals to 3-6 months. Available in single and 3-pack.

Signs You Are Overdue for Descaling
- Espresso comes out at a trickle instead of a steady stream
- Brewing is noticeably slower than usual
- Water temperature seems inconsistent
- The machine displays a descaling warning
- You hear louder-than-normal pump noise during brewing
If you see any of these signs, descale immediately. Ignoring scale buildup can lead to expensive repairs.

Keep Your Descaling Tablets Stocked
A descaling cycle uses one tablet per session, every 3-4 months. Running out mid-cycle means leaving the machine in a partially descaled state - always keep a few in reserve.
